Met Éireann records rain on roughly 150 days a year in the drier east and up to around 225 days in parts of the west. If you live here, your bag is going to get wet. The good news is that full-grain leather copes with that far better than most people think.
The short answer
Yes. A full-grain leather bag handles everyday Irish showers well. What damages leather is not getting wet, but staying wet, or being dried too fast with heat.
What water actually does to leather
- Light rain: water beads or soaks in slightly, then dries. Usually no lasting mark.
- Heavy rain or a soaking: the leather may darken where it got wet. Oil-rich and pull-up leathers often lighten back as they dry. Sometimes a faint tide line remains.
- Repeated soaking without care: leather loses its natural oils and can feel stiff or start to crack over time.
How to dry a wet leather bag
- Empty it and blot the surface with a dry cloth. Don't rub.
- Stuff it loosely with paper or a towel so it keeps its shape.
- Let it dry at room temperature, away from radiators, stoves and direct sun.
- Never use a hairdryer. Fast drying is what makes leather stiff and brittle.
- Once fully dry, apply a light coat of leather conditioner to put back the oils it lost.
If you see a water mark
Lightly dampen the whole panel evenly with a damp cloth, edge to edge, and let it dry naturally. This often blends a tide line away, because the panel dries evenly. Test on a hidden area first.
Protecting your bag through an Irish winter
- Condition it at the start of autumn and again in spring.
- Keep a dry cloth in the bag for quick wipes.
- Carry a laptop sleeve inside if you're commuting in heavy weather. Zips and seams are where water gets in first.
- Let the bag rest and dry between wet days rather than using it soaked two days running.
Why full-grain copes better than cheaper bags
Coated "genuine leather" and PU bags rely on a plastic-like surface layer. Once that layer cracks or peels in wet weather, there's nothing underneath to recover. Full-grain is uncoated hide all the way through, so it can get wet, dry, be conditioned, and keep going.
